Saturday - O'Day Mariner, with Paul and Sam. A late start of the season. A quiet trip with a soft breeze from the N-NE. Cloudy but no rain.
Sunday - Windsurfing at the Speelmansplaten in The Netherlands, with dad and Christine. A quiet start of the windsurfing season also, with 3-4 Bft.
Friday - Windsurfing at the Speelmansplaten in The Netherlands, with Christine. A bit cooler, but better luck this time, with 4 Bft.
In the meanwhile, back in Ithaca, something is going wrong with the collection of wind data.
Saturday morning - Windsurfing, 6.8 sqm. A mix of sun and clouds, with a nice breeze.
Saturday afternoon - O'Day Mariner, with Paul. The breeze died down a little bit, making the sailing manageable.
Saturday - O'Day Mariner, with Steve and his son Peter. A sunny break on an otherwise cloudy day. Very light wind, but enough to keep going. We did have to paddle back into the slip.
Sunday - O'Day Mariner, with Linda. Foggy with an occasional drizzle, but some more wind than on Saturday. Nice view of a sailboat race.
Sunday - Venture 24, with Paul. Even warmer and hardly any wind.
Saturday morning - Windsurfing, 6.8 sqm. Cloudy with an occasional drizzle, and a nice breeze.
Saturday afternoon - Hobie 16, with instructor Dan. Great! Good speeds in the gusts. We let the catamaran capsize as part of the lesson. Unfortunately, Dan had overestimated my weight, so we needed a third man hanging off the hull to get the boat upright again. I am now certified to take the catamarans out!
Saturday late afternoon - O'Day Mariner, with Beatrice, then with Elias, and finally with Beatrice, Elias, and Alex. Sunny after all, with a soft breeze. After a long day, we were the last ones to leave at 7:30pm.
Sunday afternoon - Hobie 14. Not much wind, but the occasional gust made for a pleasant sail.
Sunday late afternoon - Hobie 16, with Paul.
Friday - Venture 24, with Paul, Dick, and Russ. Very light wind. We could sail out, but ended up drifting into the weeds near Stewart park. We tried to paddle back with a wooden board we found in the cockpit, to no avail. Eventually, John came to tow us (and all the other boats) in with his chase boat.
Saturday - Hobie 16, with Alex and Beatrice. Some drizzle before we went out. The wind died down after our first run, but we had a pleasant morning anyway.
Sunday afternoon - Hobie 16, with Petra, Ivonne and Matthew. Sunny, a fairly strong breeze and some chop. We had to take the Hobie, since no other boats were available. Weehee! The cat capsized once, when a hull caught in a wave, nicely in slow-motion. The mast got stuck in the mud, but we managed to get the cat upright again, with some help from John. Petra sure loved to hang in the harness.
Sunday late afternoon - Hobie 16, with Steve and Ute. Still a lot of fun. Ute enjoyed hanging in the harness too.
Friday - Windsurfing, 6.3 sqm. A very nice day.
Saturday - Windsurfing on the small Boardworks board, 5.5 sqm, then 6.2 sqm. An excellent day, very windy for Cayuga lake. The small board jibes so much nicer than the 3.10m Pacifics.
Sunday - O'Day Mariner, with Philip. Just a quiet sail in a soft breeze.
The Siggraph '98 conference is cutting into my sailing time!
Sunday - Seasprite, with Patricia, Tim, and Paul. Not much wind, but a nice boat. John eventually towed us in after the wind had died.
Thursday evening - Morgan 30, with Steve, Hurf, and Dewey. Things are different when there is GPS, an automatic remote-controlled tiller, and double-action winches. Light air, but the boat got up to 6 knots, nearly its hull speed. We tried the spinnaker, and it worked beautifully.
Friday evening - Windsurfing, eventually on the Boardworks board, 6.3 sqm. Pretty nice.
Sunday - Hobie 16, with Eric. Barely any wind; just enough to float back.
Saturday - Hobie 16, with Philip and Linda. A soft breeze from the South, with nice flat water.
Sunday morning - Hobie 14. Similar conditions. A few nice reaches.
Thursday evening - Morgan 30, with Steve, Dewey, Mario, and Dave. Light wind, dying completely near the end. Still fun with the spinnaker.
Saturday - Laser. Light wind, with some gusts.
Wednesday evening - Hobie 16, with Alex. A bit gusty, but still a great time, occasionally sailing on one hull.
Saturday - Hobie 16. Nice sailing: flat water, enough wind and a large enough sail to keep going. Without leaning out, the Hobie went on one hull occasionally.
Sunday - O'Day Mariner, with Dave and Mahesh. No wind to speak of, because the hills block wind coming from the West. Very warm and humid also.
Saturday - Windsurfing instruction. Hard to talk about winddirection when there is no wind.
Sunday - Windsurfing instruction. Better.
Sunday - O'Day Mariner, with Jette, Ulrike, and Olivier. Warm, gusty wind, and a lot of weed. Not that great to sail all the time, but fun.
Saturday - Hobie 16, with Corey. Nice, soft breeze and warm.
Saturday afternoon - Windsurfing instruction.
Sunday - Morgan 30, with Steve, Hurf, and Russ. We participated in the sail race near the yacht club. We had a good start and made hardly any mistakes, but the boat is clearly the slowest boat in the A-class, so we came in last. Maybe the results will be better after correction.
Saturday - Windsurfing instruction.
Sunday morning - O'Day Mariner, with Corey and her mom. Nice weather, light air.
Sunday afternoon - Morgan 30, with Steve, Hurf, and Dewey. Very light air, but okay with a large genoa.
Sunday morning - Hobie 16. A nice and quiet sail before the thunderstorms started.
Sunday - Irwin with Wolfgang and Ulrike. A very nice day, with a soft breeze.
Saturday - Windsurfing, 5.7 sqm, on the 2.67m Sailboards Maui. A windy day for Cayuga lake. Great fun, slaloming between the Cornell racing fleet. A shame the wind died down a bit.
Sunday - Windsurfing, 6.1 sqm, on the Sailboards Maui. Even more fun, with a larger and better sail.
Sunday - Irwin with mum, dad, Chandra, Paul, and Wolfgang. Gusty, but nice and warm. A nice ending for the sailing season.
